Iowa Central is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and competes at the Division I and Division II levels.
The Triton athletic programs have combined for 28 NJCAA National Championships with 20 coming since 2006. The Tritons have claimed national titles in wrestling (8), women’s cross country (5), men’s half marathon (4), women’s half marathon (2), men’s indoor track and field (3), women’s indoor track and field (3), women’s outdoor track and field (1), men’s cross country (1) and football (1), in addition to five consecutive National Alliance of Two Year College Administrators Association (NATYCAA) Cup Awards – given yearly to the top two-year athletic department in the nation. In 2012-13, Iowa Central scored a record 181.5 out of a total of 200 possible points in the NATYCAA Cup.
Two of our former coaches, Paul Shupe in football and Dennis Friedrichs in wrestling, and one current coach, Dennis Pilcher in men’s basketball, are members of the NJCAA Coaches Hall of Fame.
Our athletic schedule will take you nationwide for competitions. The baseball program takes trips to Tennessee and South Carolina in the spring. The softball program travels to Florida for its spring trip in addition to a fall trip. The cross country and track programs travel all over the nation to compete against the top programs in America. The football, wrestling, rodeo, soccer, volleyball, golf, bowling and basketball teams also travel throughout the Midwest to compete.
During the 2013-14 season, Iowa Central enjoyed another stellar year of competition en route to a second place finish in the NATYCAA Cup standings. The Triton athletic programs combined for an overall record of 175-98-1 and an overall record of 82-43-1 in conference play. Iowa Central also claimed four team national titles, bringing home trophies in women’s cross country, men’s half marathon, men’s indoor track and field and women’s track and field. Iowa Central’s student-athletes also combined for 98 All-Region XI selections and 46 All-Americans.
Iowa Central also had a successful year in the classroom. Iowa Central had eight teams named Academic Team of the Year by the NJCAA for finishing with a team GPA of 3.00 or higher. Individually, 165 student-athletes were named Academic All-Region XI and 15 student-athletes received the NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award.
