HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Iowa Central delivered a resounding victory to end its regular season on Saturday, routing No. 8 (NJCAA Div. II) Hutchinson on the road by a final of 54-16.
The Tritons (7-4 overall) returned two fumbles for touchdowns — the latter covering 99 yards by Justin Nutof — to start the scoring barrage, and never looked back against the Blue Dragons (8-3). Iowa Central had built a 27-2 lead by halftime on its way to its fifth consecutive victory, and first-ever over Hutchinson after four lopsided losses in the series.
Jackson Martin returned the first fumble for a score. Jatoviay Hill added a late rushing touchdown.
"We're playing really good football right now," ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. "Every year, the goal is to develop our players to the point where we are starting to hit our stride at this point in the season. This team has done that.
"We've found a solid chemistry and nice rhythm over these past five games. I think we've established our identity, and the kids have all bought in."
After going 5-27 against Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference programs since the start of 2014, Iowa Central finished 5-3 versus the KJCCC this year.
"We knew coming into this what our schedule was going to be about," Montalto said. "Even though (the recent track record) was being used against us on the recruiting trail, we felt like with our campus, facilities and resources, we could get in here and compete with the right guys on board.
"We're not going to back down from any challenge. Our kids have a lot of confidence, and we felt really good about this one coming in. We'll take this momentum and get ready for (the bowl game)."
The Tritons will next play in the Graphic Edge Bowl on Dec. 2 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls against an opponent to be determined.
