AMES—Freshman Sam Peterson (Prairie du Chien, Wis.) led the Iowa Central men's golf team at the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Fall Preview after posting a two-round total 184 at the par-72, 6,680-yard Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.
Kirkwood Community College won the event with a two-day total of 591 (287-304) and Des Moines Area Community College was runner-up at 612 (308-304).
Piloting the Tritons for the first time was new coach Kris Graewin. Despite the lackluster finish, Graewin saw some positives from his squad.
"I thought it was a great opening experience for all of our men," he said. "We've been working hard since the end of August and this was our first competition. You could definitely tell that nerves played a role in some of the mistakes we made but I think everyone made strides towards the end of the tournament."
Tying Peterson was teammate Zach Colin (Fort Dodge) after back-to-back rounds of 92.
"Zach played a lot better than his score," said Graewin. "He had a couple of big numbers and wasn't able to make enough birdies to offset."
"We've had to deal with some bumps in the road to start the season but we are starting to get healthy and will be back at full strength this week," said Graewin.
The Tritons head to La Crosse, Wis. Monday for the Ronnie Eastman Invitational at the La Crosse Country Club. A shotgun start begins the tournament at 11 a.m. Monday and teams resume tournament play Tuesday at 9 a.m.
