Tritons finish third at men’s golf Quad Cup

LIVERMORE— After dropping its opening matches 3-0-1 to Des Moines Area Community College, the Iowa Central men's golf team swept North Area Iowa Community College 4-0-0 on its way to a third place finish in the second annual Quad Cup Sunday.

The Quad Cup is a four-team Ryder Cup style tournament that matches four pairs of teammates from each team against each other. The format is six holes of fourball, six holes of foursomes and finishing with six holes of best shot. Due to weather and time constraints, the final matches were condensed to nine hole matches with the format being three holes of fourball, three holes of foursomes and three holes of best shot.

Freshmen Tyler Kopp (Massena) and Luke Jones (Lamoni) won their second match 3 and 1, sophomore Zachary Colin (Fort Dodge) and freshman Samuel Peterson (Prairie du Chien, Wis.) won 1 up and freshmen Jaxon Myers (Fort Dodge) and Taylor Thede (Maquoketa) won 3 and 2.

"This is such a great event for everyone," said coach Kris Graewin. "It allows everyone a chance to go head-to-head with other people in our region and in a fun format. We had a lead in three of our matches this morning but weren't able to close them out. I was really proud of the way our team came out and competed this afternoon."

After a short fall season, Graewin sees positive signs from his squad heading into the winter months.

"You always want to end your fall season on a good note," he said. "I think our group now sees the potential it has and now we can continue to grow. We aren't even close to the same team we were when we started back in August and I can't wait to see how much the team is able to improve over the winter."

Graewin and volunteer coach Eddie Doyle paired up for the final Triton duo.

"The next thing on our minds is making sure everyone is ready to go for the spring," said Graewin. "We are heading to Phoenix, Ariz. for spring break and then we'll get right back into playing. The spring season will be here before we know it."
