MASON CITY - The Iowa Central men's golf team finished second here Friday at the NIACC Fall Invitational.
The Tritons, who won their own tournament to begin the season, fired a 302 team total. Des Moines Area was the overall winner with a 283.
"The men struggled despite finishing runner-up," said Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin. "Anytime you finish runner-up in an invitational it's a good showing but I really thought we left a lot of strokes on the golf course. We really seemed to struggle off the tee box and Mason City Country Club is a place you have to play from the fairway from in order to score and that was the difference between us and DMACC.
"Austin was able to put together a solid round today. He had a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes that he'll clean up but a second-place finish and a third-place finish in back-to-back events shows he is ready to compete at this level. We need a little more out of our sophomores but I have little doubt our guys will bounce back Tuesday at Iowa Lakes event at Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji."
Iowa Central's Kelly Boleyn was the silver medalist in the women's event, firing a round of 82.
"It was another great day for Kelly," Graewin. "She was able to take everything what we've been working on at Fort Dodge Country Club to another golf course. I think she has a great chance to have an amazing year and I am looking forward to seeing her continue to grow."
