Tritons go low again, claim NIACC title

MASON CITY - The Iowa Central men's golf team fired a round of 293 to claim the NIACC Fall Invitational title here Tuesday over Des Moines Area.

The Tritons were nine shots ahead of the Bears, with the Iowa Central B team placing third with a 303.

Iowa Lakes, Hawkeye, Hawkeye B, Iowa Lakes B, NIACC and Waldorf rounded out the team standings.

It was a packed leaderboard on the individual side for the Tritons, as Justin Schipper and Liam Ross tied for first with rounds of even-par 72. Austin Erickson, Manning Lane and Sam Evenson all had 73s to tie for third overall, while Matt Kruger was ninth with a 75.

"Very happy with how we played today," Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. "We haven't played very well at Mason City Country Club before so I was thrilled with the performance. We're still trying to work out some mental mistakes and small mistakes but once we get those cleaned up we will be able to really showcase our talent. To have our second group finish third shows how much depth we have this year.
"It's a testament to our guys and how hard they're working. We've put together two solid tournaments to start but we've got to keep working and keep progressing towards our goals."

Tomas Ribeiro tied for 10th with a 76 and Simon Mitchell and Michel Van Zijl were 30th with 82s.

Schipper had three birdies at the Mason City Country Club and Ross had five, including three on the front-nine when he fired a 34.

Lane had four birdies, Evenson, Riberio and Erickson each tallied three birdies, Van Zijl had two. Mitchell had an eagle on the par-5 sixth-hole.

On the women's side, Iowa Lakes was first with NIACC and DMACC rounding out the Top-3. For the Tritons, Ella Dinsdale was 18th with a 103 and Korie Norris finished 20th with a 110.

"It's always great to get more experience," Graewin said. "The ladies are playing very hard and working on their game each day. Looking forward to getting back after it at the DMACC Invite next Wednesday."
