The Iowa Central men's soccer team took a big first step in the ICCAC season with a 2-1 home victory over No. 13 Marshalltown here on Saturday.
The Tritons (3-1-1 overall, 1-0 in the league) used a second-half goal from Guzman Diaz to help secure the victory and hand the Tigers (5-1, 0-1) their first loss of the season.
"It's always good to get a conference win at home over a ranked opponent," ICCC head coach Pablo Rodriguez said. "We're going to hit the ground running (in the ICCAC) with Marshalltown and then (at) Iowa Lakes (this Wednesday), so this is a great start."
Guillaume Rouzic recorded the other goal for the Tritons, who went into halftime tied at 1-1. Diaz's goal came with 29 minutes left in regulation.
"Our intensity was outstanding," Rodriguez said. "I saw it all over the field, start to finish. Given we are so freshman-dominated (Iowa Central starts only three sophomores), we weren't quite sure how long it would take to see the chemistry and teamwork come together. But it's been a real plus for us so far.
"I'm very happy we got started on the right foot (in the league)."
The Tritons were winless against ranked ICCAC foes in 2017.
Iowa Central, which is unbeaten since starting the season with a loss and a tie, faces the Westerners (3-1-1, 1-0) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Council Bluffs. Iowa Western defeated Barton on Saturday, 3-2.
