Tritons take No. 4 Lakers the distance

Pablo Rodriguez had one piece of advice for his Iowa Central men's soccer team here Tuesday after falling to fourth-ranked Iowa Lakes.

"Keep your heads up," Rodriguez instructed each and every player as they walked off the pitch at Rogers Sports Complex. "Keep those heads up. You played the No. 4 team in the country to overtime."

The Lakers capitalized on a long shot attempt by Jose-Miguel Boggio that just cleared the outstretched arms of the keeper, giving Iowa Lakes a 1-0 win in the extra period.

"It was a great shot by a good player," Rodriguez said. "There's really nothing you can do about that. He made a play and they won the match. But I'm so proud of our guys. They battled for 90-plus minutes with a very good team and didn't back down.

"This was just the start of our conference season and we have plenty more chances to win games, especially if we play like this."

The Tritons (5-2-1 overall, 0-1 in ICCAC) nearly ended it on a shot attempt by Ombeni Mubake that went just over the top of the net.

Both teams had several chances, with Iowa Central controlling the action in the first half and Iowa Lakes (10-1, 2-0) doing much of the same over the final 45 minutes.

"This is nothing but a positive," Rodriguez said. "We went toe-to-toe with them and played a great match."

For the second consecutive outing, Come Grieu kept the opposition from scoring in regulation. He was in net for Iowa Central's recent 0-0 double-overtime draw with Southeastern.

Next action for the Tritons will be Saturday when they travel to Marshalltown.
