Regional Championships Day 1 Recap

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – The Tritons kicked off their first of two days at the Region XI Championships hosted by Iowa Western. The men and women both have significant leads after just six final events. The Triton throws squad started the meet off with some exceptional performances in the Hammer Throw.  Both the men's and women's throwers swept the top two spots.  Travis Petersen set a new personal best of 58.16 meters, which is currently second in the nation. He was followed by teammate Tyler Lienau in second.  On the women's side Kirsten Leisinger and Maddie Schmoker both set personal bests with marks of 49.82m and 43.89m respectively. Maddie Schmoker hit the national qualifying standard for the first time this season. Payton Roberts also threw a personal best to finish in fourth for the women while Kendric Johnson finished fourth for the men with a personal best.


In the 10,000 meter run, the Tritons swept the top three spots in both races.  Winrose Chesang, qualified for nationals while winning her first 10k in 39:29.84. She was followed by Marion Bartilol and Naomi Alvarez. Ezekiel Kipchirchir led the way for the men in 33:18.82 while followed by Jhordan Ccope and Abdul Mohamed. Both squads also swept the 4 x 800 meter relays.  The women's team consisted of Aaliyah Regg Wajid, Katy Pfile, Abeba Sullivan and Adva Cohen. The men's team consisted of Isaiah Nicholas, Alex Sanford, Mel Obadiah and Brian Bell.


In other final events, Monise Barronette was the Heptathlon champion while AJ Whittaker finished third. In the men's Decathlon, Ronniel Johnson finished runner up while Daequan Travis finished sixth. Barronette also finished fourth in the women's long jump while Caleb Kath finished third. Barronette and Whittaker teamed up to finish fifth and seventh in the javelin throw while Johnson and Eric Maymon finished fifth and sixth in the men's javelin.


In preliminary events, Amira Davis will advance to tomorrow's final in the women's 100 meter run while Bryant Brown, Dan Oyekunle and Cary Lockhart advance in the men's 100m. Barronette and Whittaker will run in tomorrows final of the 100 meter hurdles while Tyreck Newman and Travis will run in the finals of 110 meter high hurdles.
