The Triton Cross Country team headed to Crow Creek Park in Bettendorf, IA to race in the Region XI cross country Championships this past weekend. The Tritons were looking to defend their Regional Title. In fact, the Triton women have won all 15 Region XI Championships in history, and the men have won 12 of 15 Championships (including the last 6 titles), missing out on only the years where they didn't field a team.
The Women finished on top, with the top 6 runners, earning a perfect score of 15. Hawkeye came in 2nd with 54 points and NIACC was 3rd with 81 points. Region XI Female Athlete of the year Abeba Sullivan won the Region title with a time of 18:38.1. Lilian Busienei came in 2nd in 18:55.0, Florance Uwajeneza came in 3rd in 19:13.2, Winrose Chesang came in 4th 19:15.3, Marion Bartilol came in 5th in 19:32.4, and Marta Lukijaniuk came in 6th in 19:47.0. The top 7 runners earned 1st Team All Region Honors. Jade Ford finished 10th in 20:46.3, earning 2nd Team All-Region Honors, Janet Nyamboneka came in 13th, earning 3rd Team All-Region Honors, and Mackenzie Gaherty came in 24th in 22:36.0, earning Honorable Mention All-Region Honors. After a wrong turn by the lead cart, the Women's race was mistakenly ran for an extra 240 meters.
The Men finished as Region IX Champions, earning a score of 20 points. Hawkeye was 2nd with 74 points, while NIACC was 3rd with 85 points. Region XI Male Athlete of the Year Ezekiel Kipchirchir won the Region Title, with a new Region XI Record time of 24:16.1. Awet Yohannes came in 3rd in 24:44.6, Milos Pendic came in 4th In 25:11.1, and Jhordan Ccope came in 7th in 25;35.9. The top 7th runners earned 1st Team All-Region Honors. Kear Kear came in 12th in 26:48.7 and Will Whalen came in 13th in 26:50.1, earning 2nd Team All-Region Honors. Moise Habineza came in 18th, Miguel Coca came in 20th in 27:11.5, and Trevor Ramsdell came in 21st in 27:12.1, earning Honorable Mention All-Region Honors.
Coach Dee Brown was once again named Region XI Men's and Women's Coach of the Year. The Tritons now set their eyes on the National Cross Country Championships, which is Saturday, November 10th in Garden City, Kansas.
