Wilkinson leads all-region selections

Matthew Wilkinson showed his flexibility to do whatever the Iowa Central baseball team needed this season.

For that, Wilkinson was honored as a first team all-Region XI selection, the league announced.

Derek Kay and Ryan Wickman made the second team while Brock Johnson was an honorable mention selection.

The Tritons put together a strong postseason run, sweeping North Iowa Area in the opening round of the Region XI Tournament in a best-of-three series. From there, Iowa Central downed both Northeast and Kirkwood before coming up short in the finals, finishing the year with 35 wins.

Wilkinson handled a variety of roles on the mound, going 6-2 with three saves in 48 innings. He posted a 2.06 earned run average, striking out 54 batters including 37 over 33-plus innings in the ICCAC.

Kay hit .325 with team-leading 10 homers and 29 stolen bases, driving in 41 runs and scoring 43 times. He also had 24 walks, 10 doubles, three triples and a team-high .607 slugging percentage.

Wickman batted .369 with 14 doubles, 34 RBI, 19 steals, two homers and a triple, scoring 45 runs. He also had an on-base percentage of .521 to pace Iowa Central. In the field, Wickman did not commit an error in 56 games.

Johnson recorded 50 hits with two homers, nine doubles and 28 RBI. He scored 29 runs and batted .362 with an on-base and slugging over .400. As a fielder, Johnson had just two errors in 43 games.
