Tritons Stay Alive With World Series Victory Over Heartland
Facing elimination for the second consecutive day, the Tritons battled to an 8-3 victory over #4-seed Heartland to stay alive at the NJCAA DII World Series in Enid, OK.
Scoreless through three innings, the Tritons would break through with a two-run homerun from Jake Busson in the fourth and a three-run blast over the right field bleachers from Chayton Fischer in the fifth before scoring three in the eighth to close out the scoring in the 8-3 win over the Hawks.
"That was our best game of the World Series so far," said Triton Head Coach, Eric Stein. "A really fun atmosphere to play in. The guys were ready to go."
Busson finished 2-4 with a double, homerun, and two RBI to lead the Tritons. Fischer (3), Cooper Nicholson, Bryson Carpenter, and Luke Bohonek all finished with RBI for the Tritons.
On the mound, Maddux Gast (7-0) gave up five hits and had three strikeouts in six innings to pick up his seventh win of the season. Braxton Shaffer allowed just one hit in relief and shutout the Hawks for the final three innings.
"Maddux did a good job on the mound. He threw a lot of strikes and didn't give them many opportunities," said Stein. "We made some plays behind him and Braxton did a good job of coming in and finishing them off for us."
The win sets up a matchup with #5-seed Madison in an elimination game on Wednesday (5/28) night at 7:00 PM.
