Tritons Continue to Advance at NJCAA DII World Series With Dramatic Win
After opening NJCAA DII World Series play with a surprising 16-9 loss to #10-seed Monroe, the Tritons (52-11) have won back-to-back elimination games and are now one game away from a spot in the final four.
"You're going to have some games where you just don't play well. We definitely had one of those on Saturday," said Triton Head Coach, Eric Stein. "It wasn't the way we wanted to open, but we've played a ton of baseball games. We just need to not make the situation bigger than it is."
Following the loss, the Tritons bounced back with a 7-1 win over #6-seed Jones on Monday (5/25) and a dramatic 5-4 walk-off win over #11-seed Frederick on Tuesday (5/26) to setup a Wednesday (5/27) afternoon matchup with #3-seed Madison to advance to the final four.
A lead-off home run from George McIntyre, his 31st of the season, set the tone for the Tritons and sophomore, Carter Giesen (6-1) threw eight strong innings with six strikeouts in the Tritons victory over Jones. "I didn't try to overpower. Just tried to get ground balls," said Giesen. "I knew with our offense we would bounce back and put some numbers up. I just trusted my guys behind me."
"We played much more fundamental baseball," said Stein. "The guy on the mound (Giesen) kept the momentum going in our favor. He got a lot of soft contact and gave us a bunch of zeros."
Sophomore, Sawyer Stein led the way in Tuesday's 5-4 win over Frederick. Stein had home runs in his first two at-bats, his 29th and 30th of the season, and the clutch hit for the walk-off winner in the ninth to clinch the Triton's victory. "I had a good day. I knew I was going to get the big hit when it came to me in the ninth," said Stein. "I didn't want it (the game) to go any further." McIntyre went 3-5 and added another home run (32) in the victory. The duo continues to lead the country in home runs. Sean Stewart (4-1) threw a perfect ninth inning to pick up the win on the mound.
"After Carter got us back on track Monday, we led most of the way today (Tuesday) and just couldn't break it open," said Stein (Eric). "We got it done. We've got a chance to play another game."
First pitch on Wednesday (5/27) against Madison is set for 3:00 PM at David Allen Memorial Stadium in Enid, OK.
