The 15th-ranked Iowa Central football team was just happy to be back inside Dodger Stadium this week.
After two straight long trips to Kansas that resulted in a pair of losses, the Tritons (5-3 overall) bounced back in a big way with a 49-22 victory over Dodge City (3-5) on Saturday afternoon.
"The biggest thing was just to be back in a familiar environment," said Iowa Central head coach Jesse Montalto. "We put on a lot of miles in our travels and it was nice to be in front of our home crowd again."
Now the Tritons will look to claim the conference title in a matchup against Iowa Western next Saturday in the President's Cup.
Kickoff will be at 2:30 p.m. inside Dodger Stadium.
"The conference championship will be on the line," Montalto said. "It would be a big game no matter what, but it's for the President's Cup."
The Tritons who were able to mix and match different groups on the field because of talent in the locker room, were able to use them effectively.
"We got in a rhythm with our first group," Montalto said. "Some teams have different (units) because of underperformance, but with us, we have a ton of depth and talent that we want to get out there."
It was a slow start for the Tritons, who led just 7-6 after 15 minutes.
The Tritons then awoke for a 28-9 halftime advantage, out-scoring the Conquistadors 21-3 in the second frame.
It was much of the same to start the second half as the Tritons hit paydirt on a 42-yard touchdown strike from Zach Marker to Walter Wilbon within the first four minutes of the third quarter.
"I think in the second half, our guys wanted to get their swagger back," Montalto said. "They responded well as the game went on (in the second quarter) and then just really got going."
Marker hit George Sims from seven yards out for a 42-9 lead. The only other points in the second half came from a Justin Silverstein 13-yard touchdown jaunt.
