Moving day for Tritons at nationals

PLYMOUTH, Ind. - The Iowa Central men's golf team held firm in the standings here after the third round of the NJCAA Div. II Championships.

Joe Forsting had a 74 and Liam Ross a 75 as the Tritons are behind only Parkland and defending champion South Mountain after 72 holes of action.

"The golf course was playing unbelievably different compared to the last two days and the scores reflect that," Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. "We stumbled a bit out of the gate again and had a tough sixth hole but once again I could not be happier with how we closed our rounds. To play the last four holes 6-under par with our counting scores has given us a fighter's chance at a national title. This is such a special group of young men. The bonds that have been built this year will last a lifetime."

Along with Forsting and Ross, Tomas Ribeiro had a 3-over, Austin Erickson shot 5-over and Justin Schipper checked in at 80.

Forsting, who is 5-over for the tournament, had an eagle on the par-5, 512-yard No. 15 to go along with a birdie and 12 pars for the day. Ross had an incredible closing round, picking up birdies on his last four holes and five overall.

"Liam Ross closing with four straight birdies to shoot 75 is a testament to the player he is," Graewin said. "He had an unfortunate break on six and counted a double bogey. And then he put his mind to finish the round as best he could for his teammates."

Ribeiro had three birdies and 10 pars, Erickson had an eagle on No. 15 and 12 pars, and Schipper had two birdies and 10 pars.

Iowa Central had a team total of 301, giving them an 883 score for the week. Parkland sits at 874 and South Mountain 875. Glendale is right behind the Tritons with an 885 while Kirkwood rounds out the Top-5 with a 902.

"We're showing our depth," Graewin said. "We've had a different person lead us in scoring every day and that's the type of program that I want to have going forward. We're looking forward to competing one more time together and against such great teams and programs."

The final round tees off here on Friday.
