Tritons finish with a bang

Playing for the final time this season, the Iowa Central rugby team scored a sweep over three matches with Iowa State here on Saturday at Crimmins Field.

In the A-side, the Tritons posted a commanding 64-8 victory, with the B-side downing the Cyclones, 53-10. In a special 7s match, Iowa Central came out on top, 21-19.

Following a year of constant change, it was a positive way to go out for the sophomores and moving forward in the eyes of Triton head coach Brent Nelson.

"While it was really nice to get the wins, I was more proud of the six young men who we introduced between matches as graduates," Nelson said. "They have stuck with it this year, finished out their degrees and will walk out of here with bright, bright futures.

"That was the proudest moment for me."

Iowa Central converted 10 tries in the match with Dakota Southworth, Herbert Evans and Hugo Minnaar all recording two each. Philip Woodhouse, Gus Sokol, Tavius Sykora-Matthess and Clifton Patterson each had one with Harrison Dalton going 6-for-8 on conversion kicks and Aiden Farrell 1-for-1.

Patterson scored his first A-side match.

In the B-side, Tony Robinson and Edmon Rabeh each had two tries with Chris Santos, Oratile Molatlhegi, Raykyle Taisague, Javarious Burris and Graeme Webster picking up one each. Auro was 4-for-9 on conversions.

"Iowa State is a nice club program with great numbers and a coach that is very passionate about the sport," Nelson said. "They are a proper team. They had wrapped up their 15s season but were able to put together a team to come and play us to prepare their 7s team for nationals."

Rabeh recorded his first collegiate tries after joining the program for the first time this year to play rugby for the first time.

"For both Clifton and Edmon those were incredible moments," Nelson said. "They both stuck it out and really worked hard to make the most of their opportunities."
