Tritons host annual Midwest Cup in the pool

The Iowa Central swim program gets their one and only chance to compete at home beginning Friday with the two-day Midwest Cup.

Action begins in the Dodger pool at 5 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday at 11 a.m.

Joining the Tritons will be Iowa Lakes while Barton and Southwestern Oregon will compete virtually. There will be no team scoring kept or relay events.

"We're excited that we get to have some fans in the stands," Iowa Central head coach Joe Plane said. "I know parents are very excited to be able to see their children swim in person."

The meet also marks the final time to compete before heading off to nationals for the Tritons, which will play into how the meet goes for the swimmers.

"I let the kids choose their events, so some are doing final tune-ups in their primary races and some are doing some different events," Plane said. "We're just focusing on getting some details down and racing done as we prepare for nationals."

Both the Iowa Central men and women will have several championship-contending events when they depart for Fort Pierce, Florida from April 28-May 1.

The sophomores will be honored during the meet.

"We have 10 who have been with us for two years and two who are graduating after their first year here," Plane said. "This is the end of my fifth year as head coach at Iowa Central and each year I try to do things a little better. This will be the first time we do a sophomore recognition, so I'm sure that will be a little emotional."

A live stream will be available via the Triton Nation YouTube channel.
