It was the Iowa Central Tritons that prevailed at the Region 11 Championships to reearn a title they relented last season. The Tritons won eight of the 20 events and earned 24 of the 60 All-Region spots -- which are given to top three finishers in each event. Across the league, Iowa Western won eight events as well and received 17 slots on the All-Region performance list. Indian Hills won three events and Hawkeye won one to round out the 20 champions.
The top award winners of the Indoor Track & Field season went to Iowa Central's Waukeem Walters and Indian Hills' Rivaldo Marshall.
Walters, the ICCAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year put together an outstanding regional championship performance, tying as the highest scoring field event point scorer at the meet with 18. He won the Long Jump and finished as the runner up in the Triple Jump. To date, Walters is currently ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA in the Long Jump with a 7.56 meter jump at the Jack Johnson Classic back on Jan. 27. In the Triple Jump he is ranked fifth in the country after a 14.93 meter best at the Region 11 Championships -- his first competition in the Triple Jump this season.
Marshall, the ICCAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year participated in one event at the Region 11 Championships -- in which he shined. He broke a Region 11 meet record by nearly four seconds -- one that stood for the last 12 years. Beyond that, Marshall broke school records in the 600 Meters, 8000 Meters, 1,000 Meters and was a part of record setting teams in the 4x00 Meter Relay and Distance Medley Relay.
In the 800 Meters, Marshall ran the third-best time in NJCAA history. He currently is in the top 5 in the NJCAA in all of his events and relays this season.
Among other notable First Team All-Region performers were Iowa Central's Yared Kidane. Kidane won the 800 Meters while setting a Region 11 record in the process. He was also a part of the second place 4x400 Meter Relay team for the Tritons. Kidane has qualified for seven National Championship events this season.
Iowa Western's Tahj Hamm took home the 200 Meters and 400 Meters this season to earn First Team in each race. His teammate Jacinto Gaspar also won a pair of events, the 3000 Meters and 5000 Meters.
Aries Scott of Iowa Central, the back-to-back region champion in the Decathlon at the Outdoor regionals, won the Heptathlon. Other Iowa Central individual First Teamers were Zion Campbell in the 60 Meters, Joel Nyatusah in the 60 Meter Hurdles, Roman Kuleshov in the Triple Jump and Camron Ventura in the Pole Vault.
Mohammed Kowa of Iowa Western was on the 4x800 Meter Relay championship team -- he also took runner up in the 1000 Meters behind Marshall's record breaking run.
Fellow Reivers Tyler Missick won the High Jump and Denzs Simmonds took the Shot Put.
Rounding out the individual First Team performances -- Tyrice Tayor (Indian Hills) won the 600 Meters, and Tino Tamayo won the Weight Throw.
As for Coach of the Year, Dee Brown earned the award. This season, Brown stepped back as the Track & Field head coach after the departure of Nick Ekel and brought the Region 11 crown back to Fort Dodge.
