The Iowa Central men's and women's track and field teams competed at the NJCAA National Championships in Monroe, LA May 16-18.
Recording top-10 finishes for the Triton women were Dayvione Briggs, 400-Meter Hurdles, fourth place (1:01.44); Abigail Frey, 400-Meter Hurdles, seventh place (1:04.81); Tina Samson, Long Jump, fifth place (5.97 meters) and Women's Heptathlon, sixth place; and Sara Diew, Discus, eighth place (41.47 meters).
Top-10 finishers for the men include the 4x100 meter relay team of Youssef Hamed, Waukeem Walters, Bongumusa Nkosi and Stephen Sydnor, finishing fifth with a time of 40.45 seconds. The 4x800 meter relay team of Antoine Tshimanga, Trevon Prince, Seon Booker and Jadon Boots, also finished in fifth place with a time of 7:39.28. Stephen Sydnor finished 10th in the long jump with a jump of 7.09 meters.
Earning United States Track, Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-American honors were Dayvione Briggs, 400 Hurdles; Tina Samson, Heptathlon and Long Jump; Abigail Frey, 400 Hurdles; Sara Diew, Discus; Men's 4 x 100 Meter Relay (Hamed, Walters, Nkosi, Sydnor); and Men's 4x800 Meter Relay (Tshimanga, Mohamed, Prince, Boots).
Recording all-time Triton top-10 finishes were Tina Samson, high jump (#5); Dayvione Briggs, 400 Hurdles (#6); Jadon Boots,1500 Meters (#7); Men's 4x800 Meter Relay (#7); Abigail Frey, 400 Hurdles (#8); and Sara Diew, discus (#9).
Both the Triton men and women finished 18th in the team standings.
"While we weren't where we wanted to be as a team, as individuals our team had a phenomenal national meet and season as a whole," said Triton Head Coach Anne Cleary. We had multiple first time All-Americans and many of our student-athletes had lifetime or season bests at the national meet, as a coaching staff we couldn't ask for more than that."
