ACKLEY - The Iowa Central sport shooting team finished off a strong season with a runner-up showing here Saturday at the Iowa Collegiate Trap Championship.
The Tritons fired a 973, just five points behind Iowa Western at the Stockdale Gun Club.
Carson Feeney and Chase Martin each had 196s with Ethan Bazyn recording a 195. Thayne Chapin followed with a 194 and Isaac Crist a 192 for Iowa Central, which also claimed the ICCAC West Division title this past fall after going undefeated in competition.
Feeney placed third overall with Martin fifth, Bazyn seventh, Chapin 12th and Crist 18th. Kyle Wilkins of Grand View won with a 199.
"It really was a great year for our program," Iowa Central head coach Terry Coleman said. "Like so many others, we had our obstacles to overcome, but we saw a lot of improvement from a number of our shooters and they all just continued to work hard and get better each day."
On the women's side, Sarah Sundene was the top Triton finisher, placing eighth overall with 184. Taya Myers was 10th with a 181, Sarah Crampton 15th with a 176, Sarah England 20th with a 169 and Sally Jo Geckler 24th with a 167.
At the recent Collegiate Skeet and Sporting Clays Championships, Iowa Central won the skeet division and finished second in sporting clays.
They also had a fifth place showing at the Simpson College Invitational earlier this spring and had five Top-4 finishes at the ACUI Collegiate Clay Target Championships. Feeney won the Class B men's skeet and England the Class C women's sporting and super sporting titles.
