2020-21 Recap: Tritons qualify for national tournament

After 11 games in Brian Ortmeier's first season as head coach, the Iowa Central women faced a crossroads.

On the road that night against Southeastern, Ortmeier made the decision to attack on defense. The result was a win that helped spark the Tritons to an incredible finish and a spot in the NJCAA Div. II National Tournament.

Iowa Central battled both top-ranked Johnson County and top-seed Kirkwood in its two games in North Carolina, coming up just short. The appearance was the seventh in program history and the first for Ortmeier as a head coach.

Isabell West, who signed with Murray State, was named an All-American, joining her sister, Brittany, as Tritons to earn the honor. She also was tabbed the ICCAC Player of the Year and earned first team all-league honors with Nevaeh Galloway, who was named the top defensive player in the conference.

Autumn Dykstra and Carley West each made the all-ICCAC second-team.

"I'm just so proud of this team," Iowa Central head coach Brian Ortmeier said. "We talked after the game about all that we've accomplished this year. There were a lot of great things, it's just tough because they didn't achieve their ultimate goal.

"For me, the coolest thing has been watching the growth from the first half of the season to the second. Coming together as a team, playing for each other as a team; that has been a really fun experience to be part of. That's what got us to this point and it's just been a really special process."
