Standout Performances Lead Four Tritons to ICCAC Honors
CJ Mitchell – Iowa Central – Sophomore – Point Guard
Point guard CJ Mitchell had complete control of Iowa Central's offense in its last two games against No. 8 North Central Missouri and Marshalltown. Mitchell propelled the Tritons to victory against North Central Missouri with a stat line of 25 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. Against Marshalltown, Mitchell shot 63 percent from the floor and finished the game with 14 points, two rebounds, five assists and a steal. The Panthers won by almost 40 and Mitchell did not play the final 10 minutes of the game. Last year, Mitchell averaged just 7.7 points per game on 45.7 percent shooting, but this year Mitchell is averaging 16.3 PPG on 62.5 percent shooting — a number that will be integral to the Tritons' success.
Rileigh Schillinger – Iowa Central – Freshman
Iowa Central Community College freshman Rileigh Schillinger is the ICCAC Athlete of the Week after a standout run at the Leatherneck Classic, finishing 27th out of 273 women. Schillinger posted games of 166, 205, 158, 238, 163 for 930 total pins (186 average), highlighted by a clutch 238 in Game 4. She was the top ICCAC finisher and the highest-placing NJCAA athlete at one of the year's biggest collegiate events, leading by example and continuing to elevate her game each tournament.
Talya Sampson – Iowa Central – Sophomore – Outside Hitter
Iowa Central is on its way to the national tournament with Talya Sampson shining in the Region 11-A Tournament. Sampson, named Tournament MVP, started the tournament with 20 kills and 22 digs to beat Central 3-0 in the semifinals. Then in the championship match, Sampson posted another great game with 13 kills, seven digs and two blocks to sweep Southeastern and earn the Tritons an automatic spot at the national tournament. Sampson will continue to play a crucial role with Iowa Central, as the team will have high hopes for the national tournament, given the caliber of play the Tritons are capable of.
Marcellus Chandler – Iowa Central – Freshman – Kick Returner
The weather conditions might've been cold, snowy and windy, but that didn't stop Marcellus Chandler from heating up. The freshman returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards to the house. He went untouched as he blew by all the Independence defenders. Chandler added an 18-yard touchdown catch on offense to round out an impressive day for the freshman. Chandler and the Tritons will face off against No. 11 Garden City at Broncbuster Stadium in Garden City, Kan.
