Three champs, runner-up finish for Tritons

COUNCIL BLUFFS - The Iowa Central wrestling team has battled to put it all together in dual action this season.

That wasn't the case here Sunday at the North Central District Championships, as the ninth-ranked Tritons placed second and crowned three individual champions.

Indian Hills finished atop the team standings with 127 points followed closely by Iowa Central at 117.5. Iowa Western, North Iowa Area and Iowa Lakes rounded out the Top-5. All five teams are currently ranked in the Top-13 in the nation.

Phil Smith Jr., Andrew Gamble and Jose Rodriguez all picked up championships with Aidan Harris and Jorden Pryor finishing second in their respective weight divisions.

"We had some ups and downs during the day," Iowa Central head coach Luke Moffitt said. "But considering we are midway through the season and looking at the big picture, compared to where we were a few weeks ago, we've made progress."

Bret Minor was third, Nolan Miller-Johnston, Jesus Gutierrez and Hugo Harp were fourth with Chad Klein placing fifth.

Smith, a well-decorated prep wrestler, earned two major decisions on the day, outscoring his opponents from Iowa Western and Indian Hills 27-3 at 149 pounds.

Gamble, a returning national qualifier, captured the 157-pound bracket with a technical fall and a major decision, scoring 37 points. Rodriguez, a returning national placewinner, had a decision and a major decision, racking up 28 points in his two matches.

Iowa Central finished the tournament with the most team points scored at 177.

The Tritons have duals against Iowa Lakes, Ellsworth and Iowa Western on the schedule before nationals begin April 21.

"We have those duals left and a chance to avenge some losses," Moffitt said. "We still have things to work on so we'll get to that and prepare to have these guys ready for nationals."
