It was a dominating conclusion to the regular season for the Iowa Central wrestling team here Wednesday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse.
Pins from Aidan Harris, Bret Minor and Keaton Geerts helped the ninth-ranked Tritons set the tone as they posted a convincing 32-10 victory over No. 5 Iowa Western.
The dual marked the final match in a shortened regular season, as Iowa Central (3-4 overall, 3-3 in ICCAC) will now have nearly a month to prepare for the NJCAA Championships.
"Aidan really set the tone there right from the start," Iowa Central head coach Luke Moffitt said. "He's been putting in work and has really improved over the past few weeks. His match got us going and we kept that momentum moving forward."
Harris, a freshman from Utah, recorded a pair of takedowns before pinning Connor Attkisson in the second round. Ranked seventh at 133 pounds, Harris has been competing at 125.
Minor, ranked eighth, picked up a first period pin vs. Andre Anderson at 141 pounds. Phil Smith Jr. added a technical fall at 149 and Andrew Gamble followed with a decision to push the Triton lead to 20-4.
"We've just got to keep getting better each day," Moffitt said. "We've done a good job of that since before districts."
At the North Central District Championships earlier this month, Iowa Central placed second. They have followed that performance up with dual wins over Iowa Lakes, Ellsworth and now Iowa Western by a combined score of 115-32.
Geerts pinned Carter Mix in the opening period, Nolan Miller-Johnston pulled out a hard-fought 5-4 decision over Michael Waggoner and heavyweight Jorden Pryor ended the night with a 7-2 decision vs. Derrin Sesker.
Couy Weil, Chuy Gutierrez and Hugo Harp dropped tough matches.
The NJCAA Championships are scheduled for April 21-22 in Council Bluffs.
"We'll really focus in on getting those 10 qualifiers as prepared as we can," Moffitt said. "We'll work on weight-management, technique and little things here before heading off to nationals."
