Moffitt, Colon to enter hall of fame

WATERLOO - Iowa Central head wrestling coach Luke Moffitt and former Triton national champion Joe Colon will be part of the Glend Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame Class of 2022.

The two will be honored during a ceremony in June.

After winning a state title for Estherville, Moffitt won gold at 141 pounds while competing for the Tritons. He would transfer to Iowa and wrestle for both Jim Zalesky and Tom Brands, becoming a two-year starter and winning a Big Ten Tournament title.

Moffitt was named the Outstanding Wrestler in 2002 and is now in his 18th season leading Iowa Central where he has won seven national titles and placed in the Top-8 at nationals 17 consecutive years. That run includes 12 Top-3 finishes, 31 individual champions, 49 finalists and 102 All-American wrestlers.

Colon was a two-time state champion at Clear Lake before being named the Outstanding Wrestler of the national tournament for the Tritons, helping them to the team title in 2010. He would go on to wrestle for the University of Northern Iowa and currently trains at the Cyclone Regional Training Center in Ames.

On the international scene, Colon has several Top-5 finishes at the U.S. Open and World Team Trials.

Other honorees in the class include Bie Gie Fenwick, Joel Sharratt, Jay Borschel, Barry Weldon and the 2017 Grand View team. The Trizzino family will be presented with the Bowlsby Family Legacy Award and Eric Whitcome the Bob Siddens High School Coaching Excellence Award.
