2020-21 Recap: Historical swims for Mouton

Magali Mouton made the decision to cross the Atlantic Ocean from France and compete for Iowa Central.

That long journey paid off this year.

Mouton became the first female Triton swimmer to win a national title, finishing with three gold medals to her name in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke events in Florida. Her efforts helped Iowa Central place third on the women's side with the men finishing second.

"It means a lot to me because I am still surprised since we have a lot of athletes at Iowa Central," Mouton said. "I'm honored and grateful to be the one who has been named top female. I'll be forever grateful for Iowa Central. I spent amazing moments there, met new friends who became my family. I love it even if it wasn't easy every day between school and training."

Joe Plane was named the men's coach of the year as the Tritons broke nine school records during the meet.

Iowa Central also named Mouton the female athlete of the year for the 2020-21 season.

"It's really great for Magali after all her hard work and winning three national titles to not only be our first female national champion but also now our first Iowa Central athlete of the year," Plane said. "Being in the best athletic department in the country, this award means just that much more. When you look at all the great athletes Iowa Central has across all our sports, it's truly a great honor."
