Meauri wins heat at Summer Olympics

Judith Meauri put together a perfect swim Friday at the 2020 Summer Olympics, scoring a first place finish in her heat of the 50 freestyle.

Meauri, a former Iowa Central swimmer, clocked a time of 27.56 to win the fourth heat of the event. Her time was good for 53rd overall for the Papua New Guinea native. 

Australia's Emma McKeon had the quickest time in prelims, finishing in 24.02. The 16 fastest swimmers advanced to the semifinals. 

Meauri bested Aleka Persaud of Guyana, who was second in the heat in 27.76. She had a reaction time of 0.72, as her overall time was fastest than anyone in the three previous heats. 

At the 2012 Olympics, Meauri also swam for PNG, placing 47th overall. She qualified for the 2020 Olympics with a swim of 27.34.

Meauri swam for Iowa Central in 2011-12.
