NEW ORLEANS –After a week of action following the first set of U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NJCAA National Team Rankings, the cream of the crop remained at the top in the newest rankings, announced on Wednesday.
The men of Barton (Kan.) CC and Iowa Central CC's women stayed atop the rankings for the second-straight week this year. While there was minor shuffling in the top-five on the men's side, the women's rankings saw some considerable movement.
The NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships will be held in Lubbock, Texas, on March 2-3.
MEN'S STORY
Barton (Kan.) CC managed to stay in the lead in the rankings thanks to 11 top-20 NJCAA Descending Order List marks set this past weekend at the Black and Gold Premier at the University of Iowa. Charlie Forbes posted a 7.94 in the 60 hurdles, while Bradley Fleurinord notched a 7.27m (23-10¼) long jump mark. Both marks are good for second on the Descending Order List.
Iowa Central CC also stayed put in the rankings this week, coming in again in second.
Cloud County (Kan.) CC made the most significant move on the week, jumping two spots in the rankings to third. Thobile Mosito (1000 and 3000 meters) and Moses Dirane (1000 meters) were outstanding at the Jayhawk Classic, as both notched top-five Descending Order List marks this past weekend in their respective events.
Coffeyville (Kan.) CC and South Plains (Texas) rounded out the top-five on the men's side.
WOMEN'S STORY
Iowa Central CC got 14 top-10 Descending Order List marks over the weekend at a pair of meets at Minnesota and Iowa. Adva Cohen ran the fastest mile time in NJCAA this season at 4:45.14 and was joined at the top of the Descending Order List by Nelda Huggins, who posted the NJCAA's fastest 60 time at 7.40.
But while the men's top-five went relatively unchanged, the women's saw a major move as Central Arizona shot up three spots to second. The Vaqueros saw three top marks in the NJCAA this season hit by its athletes in Josephine Andkye's 24.26 in the 200, Cherisse Murray's 15.92m (52-2¾) in the shot put and the 4×800 relay team's time of 10:21.35.
Central Arizona's rise in the rankings knocked New Mexico JC, Barton (Kan.) CC and Monroe (N.Y.) all down one spot each.
