The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference announced the 2018-19 Indoor Track & Field Coach and Male & Female Athletes of the Year this week.
Iowa Central's head coach Nigel Bigbee received Coach of the Year award after he led the Tritons to their 14th straight Regional Championship. Bigbee has been around the program before, as he made significant impacts as an assistant coach. As an assistant, he coached two new school records in both the men and women 4x100 relays as well as eight individual school records. Iowa Central is ranked third nationally totaling 250.78 points.
Indian Hill's Kenny Bednarek was named Male Athlete of the Year for the 2018-19 Indoor Track & Field season. The freshman was a stand out all season, but nothing like at Regionals. Bednarek sprinted his way into the Regional Championship in the 400-meter run. His time of 46.60-seconds secured his victory by nearly 2.5-seconds.
Iowa Western's Dorcas Gyimah earned Co-Female Athlete of the Year honors after a successful Indoor Track & Field season. The Ghana native improved her overall 60-meter dash time this year, accumulating a new PR of 7.54-seconds. The Reivers count on Gyimah to lead the team. Gyimah is set to compete in multiple events at Nationals including the 60-meter dash (7.54-seconds) and the 200-meter dash (24.91-seconds).
Sharing the award with Gyimah was Iowa Central's Maddie Schmoker. The sophomore thrower from Kellogg, Minn. had an outstanding performance at Regionals and is among the best at the National level. She set personal bests during the meeting, winning the weight throw (17.00) and finishing second in the shot put (12.98m). She currently ranks 12 in the shot put and 5th in the weight throw for NJCAA.
