The Tritons headed down to Marshalltown Community College for a Wednesday evening match. Both teams have had a great start to the year, with Marshalltown winning their first 7 matches and entering the game at 8-4.
Both teams got off to a shaky start, handing each other points off of unforced errors. The Tritons would hit just .088 for the first set but managed to find a way to win, 25-22. The second match was a little cleaner, but Marshalltown aggressively attacked the Triton block, finding ways to hit through the Tritons' hands for kills. The Tigers would win set 2 19-25.
The Tritons got a much-needed momentum break, as both teams headed to the locker room for a mid-game intermission. The offense would finally start to come alive, as the Tritons hit .370 for the third set. Marshalltown got off to a quick lead in set 3, pulling ahead 18-11. Liza Hatcher provided a huge spark, reeling off 7 straight points, tying the match at 18. The Triton blockers stepped up their game towards the end of set 3, slowing down a tenacious Marshalltown attack. Tritons won a tight set 3, 27-25.
All the momentum went with the Tritons for set 4, as they quickly pulled out in the lead right from the start. Abby Lohrmann served all of her 6 aces in the final set, and Marshalltown could not find an answer. Tritons won set 4 25-7.
Gabby Sullivan had a great night at the net, registering 17 kills on 36 swings (.417 efficiency) and 2 blocks. Hannah Murray followed up her impressive showing vs Jamestown with another great performance adding 7 kills on .412 efficiency, 1 ace, 10 digs, and 3 blocks. Abby Lohrmann had 29 assists and 6 aces, Liza Hatcher chipped in 3 aces and 7 digs, while Michele O'Haver's 25 digs and Kayla Faldet's 4 blocks led the defense. The Tritons are now 13-1 on the season.
Iowa Central returns home this Friday with matches against Highland (KS) at 3pm and Grand View JV at 6:30pm.
