Iowa Central downs 10th ranked opponent

BOONE - Through 28 matches this season, No. 1 Iowa Central is a perfect 28-0 on the volleyball court.

That includes 10 wins over Top-14 ranked opponent after sweeping two more teams here Saturday at the Des Moines Area Tournament.

Iowa Central earned 3-0 wins over both eighth-ranked Heartland and No. 14 DMACC, stretching its current streak of wins without allowing a set to 10.

"We came away from this weekend winning all 12 sets of a really challenging schedule," Iowa Central head coach Sara Horn said. "To play the No. 8, No. 12 and No. 14 ranked teams all within 24 hours was a huge challenge. I thought our girls did a great job of battling through a tiring schedule and worked hard to stay mentally tough.

"Everyone did great doing their jobs and we showed just how balanced we are both on offense and defense."

Katilyn Steffes had 20 kills on the day, while Angel Baylark and Haley Alharithy each had 16. Brooke Dobson recorded 12 with Alesha Johnson picking up 70 assists.

Baylyn Johnson had 26 digs, Jori Hajek 22 and the Tritons finished with 13 serving aces, 23 block assists and three solo blocks.

"To be 28-0 on the season at this point is pretty amazing," Horn said. "We've faced a Top-14 ranked opponent 10 times already, but this team really likes to be challenged. It's definitely been fun watching them improve and reach new heights."

Iowa Central returns home on Wednesday to host ninth-ranked Kirkwood inside Hodges Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
