Iowa Central Secures 18th Straight Regional Crown

The ICCAC continues to be dominated by the Iowa Central cross country program.

Getting the opportunity to compete at home on Sunday, the Tritons swept the Div. I titles here at Lakeside Golf Course. The same venue will host the NJCAA Championships later this month.

Kelvin Bungei cruised to the men's title, completing the course in 25:12. Pur Biel was third, Hunter Klimek fourth, Chris Levario eighth and Noah Friske ninth as the Tritons scored 25 points to place well ahead of Iowa Western, Indian Hills and Southwestern.

"What a performance from our guys to be able to secure their eighth Region XI Championship in a row," Iowa Central head coach Nick Ekel said. "It was awesome to see our student-athletes working together in their packs and communicating throughout the race."

For the Iowa Central women, Eleonora Curtabbi led the way with a runner-up finish in 17:58 followed by teammates Rosalie Fish, Lilia Alvarez and Kate Miron who finished third, fourth and fifth overall.

Josie Stackis and Shaunti Longfellow added Top-10 placings for the Tritons who finished with 21 team points. Iowa Western was second and Indian Hills third.

"We were very pleased with how all of our women ran," Ekel said. "They ran with confidence, control and poise to win their 17th Region XI Championship in a row. This is a group which cares deeply for one another, and it's gratifying to see them starting to realize how special this team is and can yet be."

The Triton men have now won eight consecutive regional titles with the women claiming gold every year since 2004. Iowa Central will be looking to defend its national title on the women's side from a year ago.

"Overall, our coaching staff is very pleased where the team stands with two weeks until the NJCAA National Championships," Ekel said. "Sunday was a full-speed preview of what to expect on November 14 at Lakeside Golf Course, and we are looking forward to tuning up for the national meet in the coming days."

In the Div. II races, North Iowa Area's Sarah Bertry and Melvin Kipekmboi were individual winners with the NIACC men and Hawkeye women claiming team titles.
