Hawes Earns Big-Time UFC Victory

Former Iowa Central standout Phil Hawes didn't need much time to make an impact at UFC 254.

The former Triton wrestling champion landed a power shot on Jacob Malkoun Saturday, finishing him for his first official Octagon victory. The fight lasted just 18 seconds in Abu Dhabi from Fight Island.

"I feel great," Hawes said after. "I feel awesome. It was cool. I just knew if I land, someone was going to sleep. I landed."

Hawes captured the 2009 NJCAA national title at 197 pounds for Iowa Central. He would go on to compete at both Iowa State and Wartburg before embarking on his current career in MMA.
